Timely New Resources for Teenagers

Internationally, approximately 1 in 5 families has a member living with mental illness, and 1 in 8 families has someone living with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Young people growing up with parents dealing with emotional problems are at greater risk of having behavioral or emotional problems themselves. However, very few resources exist for these youth! Clinical psychologist at the Oklahoma City Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, Michelle Sherman, Ph.D., and her mother DeAnne Sherman (a teacher) have created two hopeful, award-winning resources specifically for these teenagers, namely:

I'm Not Alone: A Teen's Guide to Living with a Parent Who Has a Mental Illness
Focuses on living with a parent who has schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression.

Finding My Way: A Teen's Guide to Living with a Parent Who Has Experienced Trauma
Addresses living with a parent who has endured some form of trauma, such as military combat, domestic violence, sexual assault, terrorism, or natural/manmade disasters

Both books are highly interactive, containing numerous activities, open-ended sentences, short stories depicting healthy coping, and opportunities for reflection. They can easily be used as a basis for a support group - or as supplementary material for an existing curriculum. These resources are ONLY available through the Seeds of Hope Books website: www.seedsofhopebooks.com or through a toll-free phone number (1-800-901-3480, x118).
