I am pleased to invite you to the Eliminating Stigma Barriers to Mental Health Care: Targeting the Health Professions symposium being held April 14-15, 2011, at Carleton University in Ottawa, which is co-sponsored by the Royal Ottawa Hospital Institute of Mental Health Research, the Canadian Medical Association, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Mental Health Association of Canada.

The objective of this meeting is to bring together stakeholder groups from multiple perspectives, including consumers, families, community organizations, health care professionals, and researchers to discuss the differential implications of the stigma of mental illness as it is experienced within the health care system. Ultimately, we seek to identify research priorities for establishing evidence-based intervention, policy, and advocacy approaches for altering stigma among health professionals, and improving treatment access, willingness to seek help, and commitment to treatment. As such, we think it is crucial to invite active audience participants, who are passionate and knowledgeable about the issues surrounding stigma associated with mental health disorders.

Attached is the agenda for the meeting, a map of Carleton University, and registration forms to be returned to susan_smallwood@carleton.ca by March 31st.  Included in these forms is registration information, a video/photo release, as well as hotel and transportation information. Please note that there is limited space for this event, so we encourage you to register early. If you are unable to attend this event, we welcome having another member of your organization attend. Please note that, where relevant, you will need to make your own travel and accommodation arrangements for this event.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. I look forward to seeing you.

Yours sincerely,

Kimberly Matheson, PhD
Vice-President (Research and International)
